This delightful food tour will give you a taste of the various cuisines that are made by the different ethnic groups in Nepal. Although dal bhat is most common, there are various other foods native to the country that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. You can get dal bhat or momo at any old place in Kathmandu, but if you search a little deeper, you’ll find truly unique flavors that you never imagined existed.
At the places we visit, you won’t find a chicken burger or French fries on the menu – just traditional Nepali food. In Patan, we’ll try a Newari Khaja set that includes a taste of buffalo intestine. Whether you like it or not, you won’t regret trying it! Newars are native to the Kathmandu Valley. Further north –in the transitional area between the Himalayas and the lowlands –is the Thakali people. We will try some of their treats found in Kathmandu. Finally, we will try something from the Terai in southern Nepal. From sweet, savory, spicy, sour, each snack keeps things exciting for your taste buds.
Several stops will satisfy our appetites, and now it is time for the drinks. Have a couple glasses of local homemade rakshi. Rakshi is the traditional distilled drink in Nepal made from millet or rice. It is a strong drink, like gin or vodka. It is accompanied with spiced pieces of chicken, pork, water buffalo, or goat. If you’re not into hard drinks, we can treat you to other traditional drinks, such as tongba or chhang. After you’ve had your fill, you’ll head back to the hotel feelin’ good. The food and the way people eat says a lot about a country. Get a little closer to the culture of Nepal by experiencing our Yuck Yummy food tour. You may never have the chance to taste these unique flavors again!
