The Mardi Himal trek provides a more intimate and authentic experience. Please note that we will visit fewer local villages during the hike as it is a shorter version of the trek. Nevertheless, depending on the season, it may be possible to observe shepherds and local villages, such as Ghalel, on our return to Siding and during the drive to Pokhara. Designed for all levels of hikers, from beginners to families, this moderately challenging trek promises lasting memories of stunning landscapes and unmatched mountain panoramas.

Why Choose the Short Mardi Himal Trek?

The Mardi Himal trek is highly popular among other trekking routes in Annapurna due to its breathtaking Himalayan views and the ability to reach the viewpoint and Mardi Himal Base Camp within just three days. There is no other trek that takes you to such high altitudes in such a short period. This makes it a perfect destination for travelers looking to escape their busy lives and reconnect with nature and the spirit of the Himalayas. If you've seen pictures of the colossal Mt. Fishtail, appearing nose-to-nose, you will experience that exact view firsthand. While Ghorepani Trekking is another popular short route in Annapurna for sunrise and panoramic mountain views, Mardi Himal pulls you higher, closer to the embrace of the Himalayas, allowing you to truly breathe it in.

This remarkable four-day Mardi Himal Viewpoint journey truly has it all: awe-inspiring mountain vistas and lush vegetation, including Nepal's famous rhododendron forests. Some people even complete the Mardi Himal trek from Pokhara within two days, particularly during the summer when the days are longer. Our team has reached Mardi Himal Base Camp within two days plenty of times, making this trek even shorter for professional hikers who want to challenge themselves within a limited timeframe.

The loop trail, located in the eastern Annapurna region, ascends to a highest point of 4,500 meters (14,764 feet). From this vantage point, you'll be surrounded by spectacular views of Mardi Himal (5,587 meters / 18,330 feet) and a multitude of other towering peaks. The adventure begins with a short drive from Pokhara, leading you into dense forests where the crisp, fresh air invigorates you, providing a special energy unique to foothill excursions. In springtime, the sheer brilliance of the native rhododendron flowers, found in vast forests between 1,400 and 3,600 meters, will leave you awestruck.

Best Time (Season) For Mardi Himal Trekking

Trekking the Mardi Himal in Nepal is possible throughout the year, with each season offering a different experience. While the entire tourism industry understandably focuses on spring and autumn due to their clear skies, we cannot ignore the inherent beauty of these two seasons. However, we also feel compelled to share our personal experiences during monsoon treks, where you'll find an unparalleled lushness in the landscapes, with magnificent mountains surrounded by colorful wildflowers. Winter, too, has a distinct appeal; every tree branch and the path itself can be covered with snow, making you feel as if you've entered a different piece of heaven. We don't want to spoil your holiday plans, but this is a reality that people often don't share. People have varied interests: some might love the flowers, some may prefer the lush green landscapes, and others, of course, will want to experience the snow. While trekking gear might need to be adjusted or purchased for different seasons, our main message is to encourage you to find what genuinely interests you.

Is the Mardi Himal trek hard? Is the 4-Day Trek Itinerary Suitable for Beginners?

Our beginner hikers have generally evaluated this journey as being of moderate difficulty. To be honest, if you are primarily a city person with no previous hiking or extensive walking experience, this trek might not be suitable for you. In that case, we recommend choosing the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek instead.

For most trekkers, however, it's considered a straightforward journey when compared to more challenging treks like Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp. There are many stone stairs to climb uphill, and the entire descent occurs on the last day. While Mardi Himal Base Camp is at an altitude of 4500m, you can opt to skip it as the view is often considered far better from the Mardi Himal Viewpoint.

Good physical fitness is required, especially strong legs. A mild headache for first-time trekkers after reaching Mardi Himal High Camp (3780m / 3580m) is quite normal, and there's generally no need to worry about severe high-altitude sickness at this point. Since the Mardi Himal Trip is a teahouse trek, there are plenty of opportunities for rest stops along the way. The route is relatively simple and doesn't require any challenging climbing. However, the best views are only accessible by climbing higher, which does demand some effort.

To reassure you, as we've mentioned before, this trek is also suggested for beginners because many families have successfully completed this 4-day Mardi Himal Trek with their 8 or 9-year-old children. This 4-day itinerary does not include acclimatization days, so if you are concerned about the elevation, it's better to opt for a 5 or 6-day trekking itinerary that includes them. The average walking hours will be 4 to 6 hours daily. Remember to drink plenty of water, at least 3 to 4 liters a day. Practicing yoga, hiking, cycling, or swimming back home before coming on this trek will be very beneficial.

Travel insurance for Mardi Himal Trek

It is strongly urged that you purchase travel insurance for your safety. Your insurance should pay for your medical expenses, trip cancellations owing to anything, and emergency helicopter rescue services.

This 4-day Mardi Himal Trek offers a captivating journey through Nepal's stunning landscapes. Starting with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Pitam Deurali, the trek immediately immerses you in lush forests with initial glimpses of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre as you ascend to Forest Camp. Day two brings a rewarding climb to High Camp, featuring a peaceful trek through rhododendron forests, initial views from Low Camp, and panoramic mountain vistas from Badal Danda (Middle Camp), culminating in majestic peaks right outside your High Camp teahouse. The highlight of the third day is an early morning ascent to the Mardi Himal Viewpoint (4,200m) for an unforgettable sunrise over the Himalayas, followed by a return to Badal Danda to enjoy its excellent views and a beautiful sunset. Finally, the trek concludes on day four with a descent through Siding Village, a bumpy but scenic drive back to Pokhara, allowing you to relax by the lake and reflect on your incredible mountain adventure. The total distance of 4 days Mardi Himal trekking distance is 35 Km in total, which is about 22 Miles.

"Get ready to start the first day of the trek to Mardi Himal after breakfast. The day begins with a 2-hour scenic drive to Pitam Deurali (1,130m) to embark on your trekking journey. During the drive, you'll see mighty Himalayan peaks, and from Pitam Deurali, you'll be able to view mountain peaks such as Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail). We will begin the 4-day Mardi Himal hiking journey from Pitam Deurali after a short tea break. If you've forgotten to buy light trekking gear like a hat or rain cover, you can purchase them here.

How is the route from Pitam Deurali to Forest Camp? Mostly, we will be walking inside the forest, and it's truly peaceful; it feels like walking in meditation. The trekking trail is not very difficult, with gentle ascents, flat sections, and descents. There are two different routes to reach Forest Camp, and our guide will choose the best one. Don't expect any Himalayan peak views while walking, nor even from Forest Camp. Today will be entirely about walking into nature. If you come in the spring season, the route will be full of colorful rhododendron flowers. Even in the summer, some colorful leaves will make the trail photogenic. Monsoon hikes are mostly pleasant with mist clouds, and if you are a photographer, you will get the best shots. Leeches will be present during the monsoon season, so our guide will carry salt to remove them. However, it's advisable to wear full pants and long socks while walking in monsoon. The winter season is suitable for trekking as there won't be much snow, and the route is safe.

What would be the optional stay with a Mountain view? We generally extend our stay 45 minutes further to Rest Camp from Forest Camp. From here, you can see Mt. Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and beautiful landscapes, including the Pokhara valley. There are limited hotels, but we can manage a stay at this place. The common trekking itinerary only covers Forest Camp."

Our day will start between 7:30 and 8:00 AM after breakfast. If we stay at Forest Camp, you won't see mountains, but you might witness the sunrise (depending on the season), offering a peaceful morning for meditation.

The trail leading to Low Camp winds through a green, lush forest. From Low Camp, we can see Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) Mountain, and we will take a short break here. After the break, it's a gentle walk up to Badal Danda (Cloud Hill), also known as Middle Camp, where we will stop for lunch. On a clear day, you can enjoy beautiful mountain views, including Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail).

From Badal Danda to High Camp is about 1 to 1.5 hours maximum, but the landscapes are simply amazing, and you will be surprised by the Mardi Himal trek trail. You can also see mountain views from High Camp. The view from Middle Camp (Badal Danda), often called the twin peak station, is one of the best viewpoints and a perfect spot for photography.

After reaching High Camp, check into your room first and then enjoy the majestic mountain peaks right in front of you. If you're walking well and wish to see the sunset, it's advisable to walk about 20–30 minutes further to a great spot for sunset and landscape photos.

Are there any attached rooms? No, you will be sharing bathrooms with others. However, the bathrooms are attached to the same building, so you won't need to go outside. You can also take a hot shower here at an additional cost of approximately 1 to 3 USD.

Our plan is to walk to the Mardi Himal Viewpoint (4,200m) 13,780ft early in the morning to witness the sunrise and stunning mountain views. Your guide will inform you of the exact departure time the evening before. Remember to bring your headlamp as it will be dark. The trail to Mardi Viewpoint and Base Camp is well-established, but caution is needed in the dark; always follow your guide's instructions. Enjoy the breathtaking morning view at the Upper Viewpoint, then hike back to High Camp for breakfast.

You can purchase tea and coffee at the Viewpoint in the morning. From Mardi Himal Viewpoint, you'll see incredibly beautiful mountain peaks and a sunrise, with landscapes that are simply "wow". You'll want to take unlimited pictures from here! After breakfast, we'll trek back to Badal Danda, where we had lunch the previous day. Badal Danda is another excellent viewpoint on this trail, so enjoy the evening watching yaks and sheep grazing. The sunset view from here is also beautiful.

You surely don't want to miss the last sunrise of your 4-day Mardi Himal trek! After breakfast, we'll embark on a 4-hour walk down to Siding Village via Low Camp. While typical trek itineraries include an overnight stay at Low Camp, we don't suggest it because the view from Badal Danda is simply spectacular (refer to the image below).

After descending all the way to Siding, we'll have lunch there before driving back to Pokhara. Be aware that the roads are unpaved, which makes for a bumpy ride! Enjoy your evening in Pokhara by the lakes and savor a delicious meal at a local restaurant.

        • Max. Altitude: (827 M) 2,713 ft - Pokhara)
        • You will visit Low Camp, Sidding village.

          Festivals and Events in Nepal

We are suggesting some of the biggest and most interesting festivals of Nepal, which are celebrated in the capital city of Kathmandu and in various parts of Nepal. You can plan a Nepal vacation or the 4 Day Mardi Himal Trek accordingly so you can experience more Nepalese cultures and participate in the festive events.

          Dashain Festival "Inside Nepal"

The longest and most significant celebration in Nepal is Dashain. The ten-day event honors the triumph of good over evil. Equal numbers of Hindus and Buddhists participate in the holiday. Dashain is a time for gathering with family and friends to rejoice. It's a joyful, peaceful, and joyful time. Dashain Festival Date and Tour Package

          Indra Jatra Festival Kathmandu

Indra and his mother, Dagini, are honored during the eight-day joyful festival of the Newari community in the Kathmandu Valley in order to obtain their blessing for the upcoming harvest. The chariots of the living goddess Kumari, Ganesh, and Bhairav will be the main attractions of the festival, as will the Lakhey and many cultural mask dances around Kathmandu Durbar Square. Lord Indra is a particularly revered deity in Hindu societies where a good harvest is crucial since he has an avatar as the god of rain.

          Holi Festival in Nepal

Holi is a festival celebrated for the final victory of good over evil and the arrival of spring after the festivals of Dashain and Tihar. Foreign and domestic visitors will throw colored water and dry powder at one another during this vibrant celebration to convey their heartfelt greetings and best wishes.

Nepal Trekking season during the Festival

Food during the Short Mardi Himal Trek.

You can simply choose food from the menu. Most teahouses prepare local meals as well as Western meals like pizza, pasta, and spaghetti. If you are vegetarian or vegan, our guide will suggest food options that are available. You will get fresh vegetables and, of course, the traditional Nepali dish, dal bhat. For meat lovers, meat is available, but after a certain point, we suggest not eating it. The meat will not be fresh because it is carried from the city. However, your guide will be able to tell you if it is safe to eat.

Mardi Himal Trekking lodge or teahouse in Nepal

Local families are in charge of running lodges and teahouses. Most lodges have either private rooms with 2 beds or dormitory-style rooms with 4-5 beds. On this 4 days trek itinerary don't expect attached bathroom. Nowadays, lodges in popular trekking destinations like Mardi Himal, Annapurna Base Camp, Poon Hill, Everest, and others have been upgraded with new amenities. During the peak season, it can be difficult to get private rooms, but we will do our best to accommodate you. As for toilets, some places have flush toilets, and some places have squat toilets.

          Short Mardi Himal Trekking FAQs

          • We advise avoiding tours with large groups. It can be frustrating to encounter groups of 20-30 people on the trail. There will be people in these groups with a range of skill levels, and the pace can sometimes be demoralizing, as you may have to wait for someone else to finish up, use the restroom, or take a break. If you have prior experience, go with a guide or porter even if you are trekking solo. There will be a maximum of 15 people on this set departure date! When you pay your guide and porter's daily expenses, you are also helping their families and children live better and receive a better education.

          • Drinking water directly from the tap is not recommended for trekkers. Normally you can buy filtered water, mineral water, and boiled water on the trail. We request our trekkers to carry water purification tablets (if you are used to the tablets). There is a big problem of plastic bottles around the trail so it's our request that trekkers use other options. Our Guide will get fresh water from the tap if you use a purification tablet. In some places, both are not worth using in that case buying water bottles is safe.

          • If you are a frequent hiker in good shape with strong legs, then the Mardi Himal Trek is absolutely appropriate for beginners, especially the 4-day trek. However, we still recommend a 5- to 6 days trekking itinerary for beginners, but the 3-day trek is not recommended due to its difficulty. You don't need any prior trekking expertise. Building up your leg muscles before the walk would be beneficial.

          • The hike to Mardi Himal doesn't require any special equipment, to start. As this is a short hike, choose the appropriate equipment from the list of hiking essentials on our website (scroll above). Get a good camera and lens if you like shooting images.

          • On the 4-day Mardi Himal Trek, you will reach a maximum altitude of approximately 4200 to 4500 meters (13,780 to 14,764 feet), with Mardi Himal Viewpoint at around 4200m and the actual Base Camp at 4500m. While severe altitude sickness has rarely been a problem for hikers on this particular trail, it's important to note that mild headaches and slight breathing difficulties can be prevalent for some, especially when reaching these higher elevations. These are often normal physiological responses to altitude, not necessarily signs of serious altitude sickness.

          • The climate and temperature of the area where you are walking significantly influence how challenging the Mardi Himal trip will be. In Nepal, it is said that the best seasons for trekking are autumn and spring.
However, there are certain less favored seasons to hike the Mardi Himal. The monsoon and winter are two less popular times to go trekking. Trekking is normally best avoided throughout the months of June, July, and August (Monsoon), as well as December, January, and February (winter). In the winter, Mardi Himal's typical daily temperature ranges from 9 to 12 degrees. Whenever you climb 1000 meters, the temperature drops by 5 degrees.

The temperature drops to -5 degrees Celsius during the evenings. The majority of the Mardi Himal routes may be covered with snow during the winter months. While trekking is painful. The greatest time to hike to Mardi Himal during the snowy season is from January to March if you enjoy playing in the snow.

          • Due to the lack of a designated path and the absence of many solo trekkers, it was a dangerous hiking route until 2019. Every path is dangerous for hikers who want to explore new areas and don't want to stick to the established trails. Regarding today, this trek is entirely secure. We only need to stay on the right path and adhere to the instructions given by the guide. It poses a concern due to its limited route, which poses a risk in the winter. Beyond High Camp, it is quite dangerous if the route is covered in snow. People enjoy taking shortcuts, which is risky, but our guides are knowledgeable and familiar with every inch of the Mardi Himal trek.

          • The 4 days Mardi Himal trek covers a total distance of 35 kilometers. The 4 days trek covers Pitam Deurali, Forest Camp, Middle Camp (Badal Danda), High Camp, Mardi Himal higher Viewpoint, and finally Mardi Himal Base Camp. Thereafter, it turns around and goes from Low Camp to Siding Village.

          • We strive to offer connected rooms up till Pitam Deurali (on the first day of the journey), but after that, all the restrooms are shared. There are modern restrooms around, but they are all shared. Bring your own hand sanitizer and toilet paper to be prepared for everything. There are tea shops along the route, so we'll stop for a tea and bathroom break so you don't have to hide in the bushes.
