Before what is now Kathmandu, there were several Newari kingdoms throughout the Kathmandu area.  Our Three Ancient Kingdoms tour offers an in-depth exploration of several of these kingdoms:  Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square.  The elegant Newari kingdoms were built roughly five hundred years ago and much of the intricate architecture still exists.  For many years, these places served as palaces for kings.
Kathmandu Durbar Square held the palaces of the Malla and Shah Kings who held rule over the city.  Though there are reportedly no official written archives of the history of the construction of Kathmandu Durbar Square, it is credited to Sankharadev (1069-1083).  Patan Durbar Square is situated at the city center of Lalitpur in Patan. The main attraction is the ancient royal palace where the Malla Kings lived.  It is a marvel of Newar architecture.  Bhaktapur Durbar Square is the plaza in front of the royal palace of the old Bhaktapur Kingdom.  Located just 13km outside of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur is full of ostentatious temples, ornate gates, and other architectural wonders.  Some of the remnants at each Durbar Square were destroyed during the 2015 earthquake, though renovations are taking place to preserve and protect what is left.
Our tour guides will give you the lowdown on these must-see tour destinations, rich in medieval history.  The intricate designs, fascinating statues, and various symbols spark many questions for tourists.  Each Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and they are full of cultural, spiritual, and historical significance.   We will take you to each of destination in our private vehicles for your convenience.  Come see the incredible skills of the Newari artists and craftsmen from centuries ago! Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.
